Since orientation was (understandably) focused on whats happening in the IAB and on campus, I thought Id toss a few ideas to orient new New Yorkers to cool stuff in the city on a grad-student-friendly budget. Because if you spend your two years here and never go below 90th or east of Central Park, you are making a huge mistake (or, as we like to say here on the internet, yr doin it wrng). First off, New York has a lot of cool sights to see, but you probably know about all of them. Statue of Liberty, Times Square, etc Im not worried about you missing. The really cool thing about the city in my opinion is whats happening  here at any given moment. There are lots of ways to find cool stuff in this category, but my two favorite are these: NonsenseNYC Mailing list:  http://www.nonsensenyc.com/ weekly mailing list with all kinds of crazy stuff going on. Music? Check. Standup Comedy? Check. Pillowfight wth hundreds of people in union square, bring your own pillow? Check. Finally consider a citibike membership if you dont own a bike. I know it doesnt come up to Columbia and wont till were long gone, but its really handy in a pinch when youre out exploring with friends, especially late at night.

The Sky Chief in â€Å"The Earth on Turtle’s Back† didn’t really have that much of a big role in the myth, but he did make the woman’s dream become reality by uprooting the tree whose hole she fell into. The Sky Spirit in â€Å"When Grizzlies Walked Upright† created landmarks using his footprints, walking stick, and fingers. He also created the mountain his family and himself lived in. The Blue Body, Black Body, and White Body were all gods in â€Å"The Navajo Origin Legend†. These gods used various parts of nature to create mankind, and they had a very important role, if not main role, in the myth. The women in origin myths are often discriminated and looked down upon. This is something that was in both â€Å"The Earth on Turtle’s Back† and â€Å"When Grizzlies Walked Upright†, but not in â€Å"The Navajo Origin Legend†. â€Å"She leaned out further to look and, as she leaned, she lost her balance and fell into the hole† (Earth 22). The Sky Spirit’s daughter got sucked out of the mountain because she looked over the edge (Grizzlies 25). The woman in each of these myths was given the role of being foolish. The woman in â€Å"The Navajo Origin Legend† is different because she was only created and there was not much said about her to judge that she was foolish or not. In conclusion, each origin myth is similar and different in many ways. May it be in the way it portrays nature, the role any god has in the story, or the role the woman has. They are all different, but also have several things in common.
